Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Restless Academic?

The Restless Academic is a specialist job advertising platform designed to connect employers with PhD students, doctoral graduates, researchers, lecturers, technicians and other academic professionals who are considering careers in industry.

The platform focuses on vacancies offered by employers that agree to assess relevant academic experience fairly, rather than automatically treating candidates as inexperienced because their work was completed within a university or research environment.

Who is The Restless Academic for?

The platform is intended for:

  • PhD students and doctoral researchers
  • PhD graduates
  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Research assistants and research associates
  • Lecturers and teaching staff
  • Laboratory, workshop and technical staff
  • Research engineers and scientists
  • Academic project and programme staff
  • Knowledge transfer professionals
  • Other university and research employees seeking industry roles
  • Graduates looking for suitable early-career opportunities

You do not need to be currently employed by a university to use the site.

Is The Restless Academic a recruitment agency?

No. The Restless Academic operates as a job advertising platform. We provide a space for employers to advertise vacancies and for applicants to discover suitable opportunities.

Employers are responsible for their own recruitment processes, selection decisions, interviews, employment offers, contracts, salaries and workplace arrangements. The Restless Academic does not employ applicants, guarantee interviews or act as the employer unless expressly stated otherwise.

Does The Restless Academic guarantee that I will find a job?

No. We cannot guarantee interviews, job offers or employment outcomes.

Our purpose is to improve access to employers that recognise the value of academic experience and are prepared to assess it fairly. Individual recruitment decisions remain the responsibility of the employer.

Are all jobs on the site based in the UK?

The platform primarily focuses on UK opportunities, but employers may advertise remote, international or overseas roles where appropriate. Applicants should check the location, right-to-work requirements and working arrangements stated in each vacancy.

The Academic Experience Pledge

What is the Academic Experience Pledge?

The Academic Experience Pledge is a commitment made by employers advertising on The Restless Academic.

By posting a vacancy, an employer agrees that relevant experience gained through academia will be considered fairly and, where appropriate, assessed on an equivalent basis to comparable experience gained in industry.

This means employers should consider what a candidate has actually done, the level of responsibility involved and the skills developed, rather than rejecting the experience solely because it was gained in a university or research setting.

What types of academic experience may be considered?

Relevant experience may include work completed through:

  • PhD and doctoral research
  • Postdoctoral research
  • University research projects
  • Lecturing and teaching
  • Laboratory and workshop roles
  • Technical and experimental work
  • Research centre employment
  • Academic consultancy
  • Knowledge transfer partnerships
  • Industry-sponsored research
  • Grant-funded programmes
  • Research project management
  • Supervision and mentoring
  • Technical publications and conference presentations

The relevance of any experience will depend on the requirements of the vacancy.

Does the pledge mean academic experience must always be treated as identical to industry experience?

No. The pledge requires fair consideration, not automatic equivalence in every situation.

Some jobs may require specific commercial, regulatory, operational or sector-based experience that cannot be fully demonstrated through academic work. Employers may continue to set genuine and proportionate requirements for their vacancies.

However, employers should not dismiss relevant academic experience simply because it was gained outside a conventional industry role.

Does the pledge guarantee applicants an interview?

No. The pledge does not guarantee an interview, job offer or particular recruitment outcome.

It means that relevant academic experience should be reviewed on its merits and should not be automatically disregarded. Employers remain responsible for selecting the candidates who best meet the requirements of the role.

Why is the pledge necessary?

Many academic professionals develop advanced technical, analytical and project-based experience but are still told that they lack industry experience.

This can leave PhD graduates and experienced researchers in a difficult position. They may be considered overqualified for graduate roles but underqualified for more advanced positions because their previous work was completed in academia.

The pledge aims to reduce this barrier by encouraging employers to focus on evidence of capability rather than job titles or workplace setting.

Can recruitment agencies and HR consultancies post jobs?

Yes. Recruitment agencies, HR consultancies and other intermediaries may advertise vacancies on behalf of end employers. They are not required to guarantee decisions outside their control, but they must inform the end employer about the Academic Experience Pledge and take reasonable steps to confirm that relevant academic experience will be considered fairly.

Questions for Applicants

Do I need a PhD to apply for jobs on the site?

Not necessarily. Although the platform has a strong focus on doctoral researchers and experienced academic professionals, it may also include suitable graduate and early-career roles.

Each employer sets the qualifications required or preferred for its vacancy. Applicants should review the individual job description before applying.

I am still completing my PhD. Can I apply?

Yes, provided you meet the employer’s requirements and can satisfy the proposed start date.

You should clearly state your expected submission, viva or completion date when applying. You should also explain which elements of your doctoral work are relevant to the position.

I left academia some time ago. Can I still use the site?

Yes. Your academic experience can remain relevant even if you are no longer working within a university.

When applying, focus on how your academic and subsequent experience relate to the vacancy, including the responsibilities you held, the outcomes you delivered and the skills you developed.

I am a lecturer, researcher or technician rather than a PhD student. Is the site relevant to me?

Yes. The Restless Academic supports people working across academic and research environments.

Lecturers may bring leadership, communication, mentoring and organisational experience. Researchers often offer project management, analytical thinking and technical problem-solving. Technicians may have specialist expertise in equipment, testing, safety, maintenance, laboratory procedures and operational troubleshooting.

These capabilities can be highly relevant to industry roles.

Will I need to apply for graduate positions?

Not necessarily. One of the aims of The Restless Academic is to help candidates avoid automatically starting again at graduate level when their experience supports a more advanced position.

The appropriate level will depend on your experience and the requirements of the job. Some applicants may choose graduate roles when entering a new field, while others may be suitable for experienced technical, research, project or management positions.

How should I describe my PhD or academic work on my CV?

Present it as professional experience rather than listing only your thesis title.

Explain:

  • The objective of the work
  • Your responsibilities
  • The methods, tools or equipment used
  • The people or organisations involved
  • The timescale and resources managed
  • The problems you solved
  • The outputs or improvements delivered
  • The skills that relate directly to the vacancy

Use clear language that a non-academic employer can understand and avoid unnecessary specialist terminology.

Which skills developed in academia are transferable to industry?

Transferable skills may include:

  • Project planning and delivery
  • Technical problem-solving
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Research and evidence gathering
  • Report writing and technical documentation
  • Presenting complex information
  • Independent decision-making
  • Stakeholder communication
  • Risk assessment
  • Experimental design
  • Budget and resource management
  • Teaching, training and mentoring
  • Working to demanding deadlines
  • Using specialist software or equipment
  • Managing uncertainty and changing priorities

Applicants should support these skills with specific examples from their work.

Can international applicants use the site?

Yes, but applicants are responsible for checking whether they have the right to work in the relevant country.

Employers should clearly state any sponsorship arrangements or right-to-work requirements within the vacancy. Advertising a role on the platform does not guarantee that visa sponsorship is available.

Is it free for applicants to search and apply for jobs?

Applicants should not normally be charged merely to view advertised vacancies or submit an application through an employer’s stated process.

Any optional paid services offered in the future, such as career resources or application support, should be clearly described and priced separately.

How do I report an inaccurate or inappropriate vacancy?

Use the website’s contact page and provide the job title, employer name and a description of the concern.

We may review advertisements that appear misleading, discriminatory, fraudulent or inconsistent with the Academic Experience Pledge. We may request changes, suspend an advertisement or remove it where appropriate.

Questions for Employers

Why should employers recruit candidates from academia?

Academic professionals can bring advanced research, technical, analytical and project-based capabilities.

They are often experienced in solving unfamiliar problems, managing complex work, analysing evidence, communicating specialist information and operating independently. Many also have experience with specialist software, laboratory equipment, technical documentation, budgets, stakeholders and regulated working environments.

Recruiting from academia can help employers access a highly trained and frequently underused talent pool.

What does my organisation agree to when posting a job?

By submitting a vacancy, your organisation agrees to the Academic Experience Pledge.

This means relevant experience gained through PhD research, postdoctoral work, teaching, technical roles and other academic employment should be considered fairly alongside comparable industry experience.

Employers must also provide accurate information about the role, organisation, location, salary where stated, employment arrangements and application process.

Can we still require industry experience?

Yes, where industry experience is genuinely necessary for the role.

The pledge does not prevent employers from requiring commercial, regulatory, client-facing, operational or sector-specific experience. However, requirements should be proportionate and should not exclude academic candidates where they can demonstrate comparable capabilities through relevant work.

Where possible, consider using wording such as:

Relevant experience gained in academia, research or industry will be considered.

Can we require a PhD?

Yes, where a doctorate is genuinely required or beneficial.

Employers should distinguish between:

  • PhD required
  • PhD preferred
  • Postgraduate research experience desirable
  • Equivalent technical or professional experience accepted

Clear wording helps applicants assess whether the vacancy is suitable.

Can we advertise graduate jobs?

Yes. The platform may include graduate and early-career opportunities, particularly where employers are interested in candidates with strong academic, technical or research potential.

Employers should state whether applicants with postgraduate qualifications are welcome and whether previous academic experience may affect entry level, responsibilities or salary.

What types of jobs can be advertised?

Suitable vacancies may include roles in:

  • Research and development
  • Science and laboratory work
  • Engineering and manufacturing
  • Data, AI and analytics
  • Software and digital technology
  • Healthcare and life sciences
  • Energy, environment and sustainability
  • Project and programme management
  • Consulting and professional services
  • Technical writing and communication
  • Quality, regulatory and compliance
  • Government, policy and the public sector
  • Product and commercial development
  • Education, training and educational technology
  • Intellectual property and knowledge transfer

Other roles may also be accepted where they are relevant to graduates or academic professionals.

Does The Restless Academic select candidates for employers?

Not unless a separate recruitment service has been expressly agreed.

For standard job advertisements, employers remain responsible for receiving applications, shortlisting candidates, conducting interviews, checking references, verifying qualifications and making employment decisions.

Are employers responsible for checking applicants’ qualifications and right to work?

Yes. Employers are responsible for carrying out all appropriate recruitment checks, including identity, qualifications, references, professional registrations and right-to-work verification.

The Restless Academic does not independently verify every statement made by an applicant.

Can an advertisement be removed?

Yes. The Restless Academic may refuse, suspend or remove advertisements that are inaccurate, unlawful, misleading, discriminatory, fraudulent or inconsistent with the purpose of the platform and the Academic Experience Pledge.

Advertisements may also be removed after their stated closing date or when the position has been filled.

Does posting a vacancy guarantee applications?

No. Job advertising does not guarantee a particular number or quality of applications.

Results may depend on the role, salary, location, working arrangements, qualification requirements, application process and overall demand within the relevant field.

Applications, Employment and Safety

Who receives my application?

This depends on the vacancy. Applications may be submitted directly to the employer, through its applicant tracking system or through another process stated in the advertisement.

Applicants should review the vacancy carefully before submitting personal information.

Is The Restless Academic responsible for salaries or employment contracts?

No. The employer is responsible for salary payments, contractual terms, working conditions, benefits, tax arrangements and compliance with employment law.

The Restless Academic advertises vacancies but is not normally a party to the employment relationship.

Does The Restless Academic verify every employer?

Reasonable checks may be made where appropriate, but applicants should also conduct their own research before applying or accepting an offer.

Check the employer’s website, contact details, company registration where relevant and the identity of anyone communicating with you.

Never send money to an employer as a condition of receiving a job, interview or employment contract.

What should I do if I suspect a job advertisement is fraudulent?

Do not provide additional personal or financial information. Stop communicating with the suspected party and report the advertisement through the website’s contact page.

Where appropriate, you may also report suspected fraud to Action Fraud, your bank or the relevant authorities.

How is my personal information used?

Personal information is handled in accordance with the website’s Privacy Policy.

Applicants and employers should read the Privacy Policy to understand what information is collected, why it is used, how long it may be retained and which service providers may process it.

How can I receive new job alerts?

You can join The Restless Academic mailing list through the website’s job-alert signup form.

Subscribers may receive selected vacancies, career resources and platform updates. Marketing consent is optional, and subscribers can unsubscribe at any time using the link included in each email.
